Luxetips Events: BET Networks Screening of "Being Mary Jane" With Mara Brock Akil
Life is a journey. It has twists and turns and ups and downs, but still a lovely ride.
Saturday I was invited to the screening of the new film “Being Mary Jane” which will be aired on BET Networks on July 2nd. The film is written and produced by Mara Brock Akil the creator of the hit series “Girlfriends” and “The Game.”
The film’s main character is a beautiful and successful African-American news anchor who is looking for her Mr. Right while also dealing with family issues and career challenges. Of course many highly educated and successful women can relate to this story and I really identified with the main character is so many ways.
The film is well written and the production is top notch! Also it takes place in Atlanta which was fun for me since I am from Atlanta.
Mara Brock Akil gave a presentation on what was her inspiration for writing the story and was gracious to answer questions from the audience about various story lines and plots we saw in the film.
I don’t want to give away the film, but believe me it is very riveting. There were many gasps and murmurs of agreement during the film. But I will share some quotes by Mara Brock Akil that I hope will pique your interest in seeing the film:
“There is a lot of me in this film but I also got some story lines from observing other successful Black Women”
“I didn’t want to do the conventional story line about successful Black Women, because the conventional is not true.”
“We (Black Women) are judged the most and the harshest and we become liars…often we have to lie the most.”
Remember the film will air on BET Networks on July 2nd at 8pm and there will also be a series starting January 2014.
