Luxetips Travel! MDFVoyage 2016: The Italian Road, Fitness and the Colors of Kalymnos
Don’t ever ever give up.
I am still reminiscing about my luxe vacay sailing the Greek Isles with Mediterranean Fitness Delights Fitness Voyage.
One of the great aspects of the yacht cruise with MDFVoyage2016 was the intense hikes with breathtaking views and guests access to their very own fitness trainer. The luxe life at its best.
For every yacht cruise, MDFVoyage employs a highly skilled fitness instructor to offer morning and evening fitness classes. For our voyage from Santorini to Kos our fitness instructor, Forrest of Forrest Fitness located in Providence, RI, instructed us in stretching, strength and cardio exercises.
In the am before morning breakfast, we engaged in stretching exercises with some yoga elements. These exercises got our blood flowing and prepared us for our daily excursions, especially the hikes.
In the evenings our fitness classes lasted between 1-1.5 hours and included lots of strength exercises and some cardio depending on how intense our daily hikes were. These evening fitness classes were quite lovely. Just imagine engaging in results driven fitness classes, bonding with other guests while the gorgeous Sun is setting over the Mediterranean. And the cool breeze from the sea wasn’t bad either! Love.
Towards the end of our voyage, we visited the beautiful island of Kalymnos. This island was a favorite because of its stunning architecture and colors.
See this island has heavy Italian influence as it was occupied by the Italians during World War II. The Italians influence can be seen through religion, architecture and culture.
The most difficult and challenging hike during our voyage was on Kalymnos. We hiked the 5 mile Italian Rd. This Italian path was built to connect the village of Pothia with Vathi. Before the road was built, the Italians had to travel a long way around the mountain to get to Pothia to Vathi and vice versa. With the Italian road, the Italians had a shorter route, but up the steep mountain and then down.
This hike was the most challenging and intense exercise activity I have ever done. The Italian Road is paved with very hard stone and is a straight steep climb up the mountain. There are no trees and little vegetation on the mountain and the Sun was super hot. I struggled during the climb up and had to stop a few times. But I did have plenty of water and support from my fellow hikers.
Halfway through, I told my fiancé and our fitness instructor Forrest, I wanted to go back, but I could not. I had to push on. But once at the peak of the mountain, all of the pain and fatigue was worth it. Look at the view!
Once we descended down the super steep mountain, we took a fun truck ride to town to have a calamari and beer party. It was much needed and such a treat! Yum!
The island of Kalymnos taught me so many things. It taught me how strong I was; how to keep going and to never give up when I want to give up the most; and sometimes you have to travel difficult roads to get to beautiful places.
Traveling with MDFVoyage is the best life adventure ever! Be sure to check out their schedule for the rest of 2016 and look out for voyages for Summer 2017 coming soon!
